Another weekend, another batch of refereeing decisions that make you wonder if the officials are watching the same game as the rest of us. Here are five howlers from the last seven days that deserve a public shaming.
1. The Ghost Penalty — Everton vs West Ham
Jarrod Bowen trips over his own feet in the box. The nearest Everton defender is two yards away. Referee points to the spot anyway. VAR upholds it. The replay shows exactly zero contact. Zero. West Ham score the winner from the spot and Dyche's post-match interview is basically a man trying not to get fined for 90 seconds straight.
Bowen's post-match quote? "I felt contact." Mate, you felt gravity.
2. Double Jeopardy Gone Wrong — Barcelona vs Athletic Club
Marc-André ter Stegen brings down Iñaki Williams just outside the box. It's a foul, fine. But the referee shows a straight red and awards a penalty — despite the contact clearly starting outside the area. Under the double jeopardy rule, if a goalkeeper makes a genuine attempt to play the ball, it's yellow and a free kick. Not red and a penalty.
La Liga's refereeing committee later admitted it was an error. Barcelona dropped two points. The "sorry" email doesn't put points on the board.
3. The Offside That Wasn't — Bayern Munich vs Leipzig
Leroy Sané is played through, flagged offside, goal disallowed. Replays show three — three — Leipzig defenders playing him on. The linesman was so confident he didn't even wait for VAR. The flag went up before Sané even shot. Bayern's social media admin posted a screenshot of the replay with just a magnifying glass emoji. Savage.
4. The Vanishing Second Yellow — Inter Milan vs Roma
Nicolò Barella is on a yellow. He commits a tactical foul stopping a counter-attack — textbook second yellow. The referee reaches for his pocket, hesitates, and just… doesn't. Barella stays on, scores the winner eight minutes later. Roma's bench erupts. José Mourinho, watching from his new club, tweeted "some things never change" and deleted it four minutes later. We saw it, José.
5. The Phantom Throw-In — Arsenal vs Aston Villa
The ball clearly goes out off Matty Cash. The linesman gives the throw to Villa. Arsenal players surround him. He doesn't change his mind. Villa score from the resulting possession. Arteta's post-match press conference was a masterclass in saying "the officials were terrible" without actually saying "the officials were terrible."
"That's a decision I prefer not to comment on." Translation: they bottled it and we all know it.
The Common Thread
Five decisions across four leagues, same story: on-field officials making mistakes, VAR either backing them blindly or missing it entirely, and fans left with nothing but anger and Twitter. The technology exists to fix this. The will doesn't.
