Loan deals are the transfer market's middle child — not glamorous enough for a big announcement video, but quietly shaping title races and relegation battles everywhere. Here is every loan deal that matters for the 2026/27 season.
Strategic Loans (with Options or Obligations to Buy)
João Félix — Atlético Madrid → Benfica (Season loan, €35M option)
The prodigal son returns. Félix's career has been a rollercoaster since leaving Benfica for €126M in 2019 — spells at Chelsea, Barcelona, and Atlético's bench. Now he is back at the Estádio da Luz on loan with a €35M option. If Benfica can get him playing with confidence again, that is a steal. If not, they send him back. Zero risk, massive upside.
Arda Güler — Real Madrid → Real Sociedad (Season loan, no option)
Madrid want Güler to play 35+ games this season and they cannot guarantee him minutes behind Bellingham, Vinicius, Mbappé, and Rodrygo. La Real play Champions League football and have a track record of developing young talent (Ødegaard, Isak). Perfect move for all parties. No buy option because Madrid are not stupid — they know what they have got.
Evan Ferguson — Brighton → Borussia Dortmund (18-month loan, £45M option)
Ferguson's development stalled last season after injuries and the emergence of João Pedro. Dortmund needed a proper number 9 and Ferguson needed a fresh start. The Bundesliga is the best league in the world for young strikers (Haaland, Bellingham, Sancho all used it as a launching pad). If Ferguson scores 15+ goals, Dortmund probably activates the option. If not, Brighton get a Bundesliga-seasoned striker back. Everyone wins.
Premier League Loan Roundup
Carney Chukwuemeka — Chelsea → Burnley (Season loan)
Chelsea's loan army rolls on. Chukwuemeka barely played last season and needs minutes. Burnley under Scott Parker play possession football that should suit him. Standard Chelsea development loan: send a talented 21-year-old to the Championship, hope he comes back worth £40M.
James McAtee — Manchester City → Leicester City (Season loan)
McAtee spent last season on loan at Sheffield United and was their best player in a doomed campaign. Now he gets another Premier League shot with Leicester. City want to see if he can cut it at this level before deciding whether to integrate him or sell. The Championship is one thing; the Premier League is a different beast entirely.
Serie A: The Loan Capital of Europe
Italian clubs practically invented the creative loan deal. Juventus, in particular, have turned loan-with-obligation into an art form that makes their accounts look dramatically better than reality. This summer is no different:
Nicolò Fagioli — Juventus → Bologna (Season loan, obligation at €18M)
Fagioli needs regular football after a stop-start Juventus career. Bologna offer Champions League and a system that suits technical midfielders. The obligation means this is basically a permanent transfer wearing a loan disguise for accounting purposes.
The Chelsea Loan Army Report
At time of writing, Chelsea have 7 players out on loan and we are only in late July. The full list will probably hit 20+ by September. Notable names so far: Chukwuemeka (Burnley), Andrey Santos (Strasbourg — Chelsea's de facto B team), Lesley Ugochukwu (Lille), and David Datro Fofana (Union Berlin). The strategy remains: buy every talented 19-year-old in world football, loan them out, and hope two or three become world-class. It is expensive, inefficient, and occasionally produces a Reece James or Mason Mount. Chelsea's ownership is betting that the hits will pay for the misses.
